Bps polysaccharide of Bordetella pertussis resists antimicrobial peptides by functioning as a dual surface shield and decoy and converts Escherichia coli into a respiratory pathogen.
The bpsA-D locus in Bordetella pertussis encodes a polysaccharide (Bps) that confers resistance to antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) such as polymyxin B and LL-37. Bps acts as a dual surface shield and decoy, reducing AMP binding and enhancing bacterial survival. Expression of Bps in E. coli also conferred resistance to these AMPs.
