The absence of osmoregulated periplasmic glucan (OPG) confers antimicrobial resistance and increases virulence in Escherichia coli. OPG knockout mutants exhibit resistance to antimicrobial peptides, vancomycin, and levofloxacin, and increased virulence against silkworms.
