The study identifies pbpD as a gene encoding a penicillin-binding protein (PBP4) that confers oxacillin resistance in Staphylococcus sciuri. Overexpression of pbpD leads to increased oxacillin resistance, and the gene can also confer resistance when transferred to Staphylococcus aureus.
