The study demonstrates that pneumococcal extracellular vesicles (pEVs) can serve as a source of DNA for transformation, facilitating horizontal gene transfer. pEVs carrying spectinomycin-resistant DNA were able to transfer resistance to competent pneumococcal cells, indicating their potential role in spreading drug resistance genes.
