small multidrug resistance (SMR) efflux pump
Overview
The sug operon involves in resistance to quaternary ammonium compounds in Listeria monocytogenes EGD-e.
The study identifies the sug operon, consisting of sugR, sugE1, and sugE2, as involved in resistance to quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) in Listeria monocytogenes EGD-e. Both sugE1 and sugE2 are sufficient for QAC resistance, and their functions overlap. SugR acts as a transcriptional suppressor of sugE1 and sugE2.
The efflux pump SugE2 involved in protection of Salmonella 4,[5],12:i:- against quaternary ammonium salts and inhibition of virulence.
The study identifies SugE1 and SugE2 efflux pumps as essential for Salmonella 4,[5],12:i:- resistance to quaternary ammonium compounds (DDAB). Both genes contribute to resistance, with SugE2 additionally affecting virulence by modulating SPI-1 expression.
